Seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has been granted a special invitation for the Australian Open, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers confirmed on Friday that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at Melbourne Park a remarkable 28 years after her debut. During 1998, she defeated her sibling Serena in the early stage before bowing out in the quarter-finals to fellow American Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her plans to compete in Auckland, New Zealand, where she also received a wild card, a fortnight before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the action begins at Melbourne Park.

Her most recent visit in Melbourne was in the year 2021, and she has finished runner-up in the singles competition on two separate instances, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and eagerly anticipating competing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many unforgettable memories there, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to go back to a venue that has been so significant to my professional journey."

Officials indicated that Williams is poised to be the oldest woman to take part in an Open's main draw, eclipsing the record previously held by Japanese Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she was defeated in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
