The former personal attorney for Donald Trump has resigned as the US Attorney for New Jersey. This comes after a court battle that challenged her right to occupy the role.

Attorney General's Statement

US Attorney General, Pam Bondi, confirmed Habba's resignation on the start of the week. She commented that the judicial decision made it impossible for Habba to perform her duties.

"Do not interpret following the order as giving up," Habba stated. "My fight will now extend throughout the country."

Court Ruling

The departure was triggered by a judicial panel found that she had been unlawfully serving as US attorney. This ruling is expected to impact scores of prosecutions in New Jersey.

The court declared that a interim role that bypassed confirmation by the US Senate violated the statute on vacant positions.

The Attorney General added that the former prosecutor will continue working within the Department of Justice as a senior adviser. They intend to seek further review of the ruling, with hopes of a different outcome.

Writing online, Bondi wrote that judges "must not countermand the President's choice of prosecutors entrusted with executing the fundamental role of the presidency of prosecuting crime."

Bondi commended the prosecutor's work and pointed out that during her run, the city of Newark saw a significant drop in offenses. Additionally that the Camden experienced its initial homicide-free summer since 1974 with no murders.

Connection to Donald Trump

The 41-year-old attorney, first joined the former president's legal defense in recent years. She later represented the former president in his hush-money trial in 2024, when he was guilty verdict on dozens of charges of financial record manipulation.

Earlier, Habba took on the role of US Attorney, the former president had revealed he was selecting her as his senior adviser if re-elected, calling Habba as a steadfast ally and a "tireless advocate for justice".
