The Oscars ceremony will commence airing only on YouTube in the year 2029, marking the latest significant transformation in Hollywood.

The organization behind the Oscars declared the decision on this week, stating that it finalized a multi-year deal awarding the streaming service the sole worldwide broadcasting rights to the Oscars until 2033.

The awards show, scheduled for March 15th, has been televised for 50 years on ABC. Commencing in 2029, the event will be available live and for free on the digital platform.

This is one more significant shakeup in the entertainment world, which is navigating studio sales and mergers, in addition to severe reductions in filming.

"The Academy is an global institution, and this alliance will allow us to increase availability to the work of the Academy to the most extensive international crowd possible - which will be beneficial for our membership and the film community," said Academy leadership in a announcement.

Over decades, ratings of the awards show have declined, though there was a slight uptick in 2025, with a notable portion of Gen Z and millennial watchers watching from smartphones and desktops.

In a related comment, the video platform's chief executive called the Oscars "among our fundamental cultural touchstones" and said that partnering with the Academy would "motivate a new generation of creativity and film lovers while remaining faithful to the Oscars' illustrious history".

ABC, which has streamed the ceremony since 1976, stated that it was excited "to the next three telecasts" it will continue to air.

The move follows film industry giants confront challenging merger discussions. Such proposals were viewed as concerning for an sector that has seen drastic cuts over the last few years.

In common with big production houses, cable networks have struggled as the viewers has shifted towards digital platforms instead.

The platform securing the license to the Academy Awards further suggests that reliance on digital platforms will persist to grow.
