An ex- Royal Marines Commando acted as a “person consumed by fury” when he drove into scores of LFC fans at a championship celebration, in what many feared was a act of terrorism, according to court proceedings. “The footage is profoundly upsetting.” Victims in the incident cried while video from the car’s camera depicted bodies spinning through the air as he accelerated into crowds while screaming: “Get out of the way!” The 54-year-old defendant is due to be sentenced on Tuesday after pleading guilty at the start of his trial last month to 31 criminal charges involving 29 victims, including eight minors. ‘A Man in a Rage’ The prosecution warned those in court that the footage from Doyle’s large people carrier proved to be “truly shocking”. It showed the parent yelling “fucking pricks” as well as “move out of the way” as he drove towards hundreds of fans, with people frantically dragging children to safety as he blasted the horn. The court was told that Doyle acted as a “individual whose anger whose anger had completely taken hold of him” as he ploughed further into the crowd, accelerating as people collided with his car. Extent of the Injuries Overall, the ex-marine hurt 134 individuals within a mere seven-minute span – with over fifty who needed hospital treatment. An infant was “miraculously” uninjured despite being left splayed on the road after the vehicle struck his stroller, the court heard. A supporter, a man named in court, was shown being thrown into the air by the car, sustaining a laceration on his head, broken ribs and multiple abrasions. Doyle could be heard shouting “for God’s sake move! Get out of my path!” before ploughing further into screaming supporters, including an elderly woman and children who were dragged under the car. Celebration Descends into Chaos Addressing a packed courtroom, lawyers said approximately a million individuals were present at “what they thought would be a day of joyfulness” marking the football club’s championship win. Scenes of jubilation swiftly became “terror”, the prosecutor said, when the driver entered the crowd as he attempted to pick up a friend who had been at the parade. “Some at the scene thought that the events unfolding constituted a terrorist incident.” Brave Intervention Stops Driver With injured people on the street, Doyle’s rampage was stopped by a former soldier, a man identified in court, who entered the back of the car and forced the gearstick into park. Despite this, Doyle continued pressing the gas pedal, the court heard. During questioning, the defendant stated he acted in a “blind panic” because he feared for his life. However, prosecutors contended that the video demonstrated Doyle “simply lost control in his determination to reach his destination”. The prosecutor added: “Consumed by anger, he drove into the crowd and as he did so his intent was to cause serious injury.” Reckless Behavior Before the Attack Footage showed Doyle had been driving dangerously before he reached the city centre, overtaking cars dangerously and jumping red lights. He ignored traffic diversion measures and bypassed other vehicles, including an ambulance and police cars, as he entered the crowds. The defendant is understood to be facing a jail term of more than 10 years when he is sentenced on Tuesday.
