Italy's Watchdog Slams Lift Ticket Cost Increases as Completely Unjustified

Italian consumer advocates are sounding the alarm over what they call completely unjustified cost hikes for lift tickets this cold-weather period, warning that alpine sports could become an exclusive privilege for the wealthy.

Significant Cost Rises Across Italy

From the majestic Alps and stunning Dolomite mountains in the northern areas to the slopes of central Italy, prices are poised to increase by as much as 40% compared to prices from three years ago, according to recent analysis.

The prestigious Dolomiti Superski pass, which grants access to all 12 resorts in the premium Dolomite area, will now cost skiers €86 per day this season. In the popular Abruzzo resort, a single-day lift ticket is projected to hit €60, following substantial visitor surges last season.

Seasonal Pass Costs and Supplementary Charges

At the same time, annual skiing tickets will range from €755 per adult in Roccaraso to upwards of €1,800 in the northern Aosta area.

The cost of renting winter sports gear has also increased, along with hotel accommodations and restaurant prices throughout mountain resorts.

Consumer Group President Cites Unjustified Increases

Gabriele Melluso, leading the consumer protection group, stated that the cost rises—attributed by resorts to increased utility expenses, facility upkeep, and demand for better equipment—were entirely unreasonable and unacceptable.

"Both because Italian inflation rates are under control and utility costs, which had raised operational costs for ski resort operators in 2022, have returned to normal," he explained.

He added that prices have climbed to points where less wealthy individuals are being compelled to skip their traditional settimana bianca, or winter vacation, completely.

Tourism Decline and Broader Context

He noted a sharp decline in mountain tourism during the 2024-2025 season, with a million fewer domestic visitors visiting ski resorts compared to the previous year due to rising costs.

Despite these increases, Italy remains a cheaper option for skiing enthusiasts in western Europe compared to nearby Swiss resorts, France, and Austria.

International Event Background

The increasing worry over winter sports expenses comes as the country prepares to host the Milan Cortina Winter Olympics between February 6 and 22. The nation's top diplomat, Antonio Tajani, recently stated that Italy had presented a plan to the United Nations urging a "global truce" during the international event.

"With Milan Cortina we must similarly convey a message of peace and conversation... to stop warfare during the Games," Tajani emphasized.
