Our team is verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a reported car bomb explosion that Russian officials say killed a senior soldier in Moscow. Russian authorities stated that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that exploded and that he later died to his injuries. An investigation is currently ongoing. Our starting point to verify the location of where the images were from relied on posts indicating the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Street in the southern part of the capital city of Russia. We used street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow hue of a adjacent apartment building seen in the video. Locating other structures, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed where the footage were taken. We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been digital alteration.
