The child of ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma has denied all charges to terrorism-related charges at the beginning of her court case in the port city of the city of Durban.

Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being charged over comments she posted on social media in the past during violent demonstrations in South Africa that followed the arrest of her dad.

A seven-day period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including theft and arson, resulted in at least 300 dead and caused damage worth an approximate 2.8 billion dollars (£2.2 billion).

The defendant has been alleged of inciting this turmoil and confronts allegations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.

History of the Case

The demonstrations were centered in the regions of the Gauteng province and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the previous president's apprehension for defying a judicial ruling to give evidence at an inquiry into claims of graft while he was serving as president.

She has repeatedly refuted the accusations against her, with her lawyer previously labelling the state's evidence as weak.

She has also consistently said the accusations against her were an bid to settle political scores with her dad after he started his own political party and campaigned against the ruling party.

Endorsement and Court Representation

This was reinforced by the Jacob Zuma foundation, which claimed the proceedings was an "power abuse" and a "coordinated attempt" of "political and family-related harassment" against the ex-leader and his kin.

A handful of followers from her political organization, her party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other party leaders participated in the hearings inside.

The defendant's representatives has argued that the proof presented by government lawyers is insufficient and fails to provide compelling evidence for a criminal finding.

Central Elements of the Trial

  • Social media posts from four years ago form the foundation of the prosecution's evidence
  • Violent demonstrations in recent years resulted in significant casualties and economic destruction
  • The accused faces multiple charges of encouragement to violence
  • Court hearings are anticipated to continue for several days

The court case continues as the prosecution and defense present their cases before the judge in what is projected to be a closely watched judicial process with substantial political ramifications for South Africa.
