California is Completely Drought-Free for the First Instance in a Quarter Century.

After a quarter-century span, no portion of the state is facing water scarcity. This milestone arrives after difficult years marked by below-average rain that intensified fire dangers and challenged its huge agribusiness.

An Update Indicates An Absence of Drought

The latest assessment from the federal monitoring program confirmed that all of California is free from dry or drought conditions. This shift came after a period of above-normal rainfall that helped fill water storage sites like Shasta and Oroville well above their historic averages.

“For anyone 25 or under you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a local meteorologist.

Following Powerful Weather to Rainy Seasons

Achieving this status featured intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in recent years, leading to extensive inundation, electrical failures, and fatalities. Even though those events started to mitigate the drought, they fell short of ending it.

Until late December, pockets like northeastern California were deemed unusually parched. Heavy rains at the beginning of January washed away those last vestiges of dryness.

A Crucial Snowpack Remains a Concern

Yet, experts warn that being out of drought is not the same as being out of the woods. Recent measurements of the Sierra Nevada snowpack place it at approximately 70 percent of the typical level.

This mountain snow, which accounts for a significant portion of the state's water supply as it runs off, is a key piece for long-term water security. Hydrology managers stress that it is premature to determine the outlook for the annual water supply.

“The current pattern right now is a higher ratio of rain to snow,” said a hydrology section chief. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re nearer to normal.”

Although the monitor shows a clean slate, the next challenge is to maintaining this positive water situation for the coming seasons.
