A individual indicted with harassing Kate McCann allegedly recorded her a phone message which asked: "imagine I am Madeleine?"

Julia Wandelt, 24, who a jury heard has repeatedly claimed she was the vanished Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are standing trial accused with pursuing Kate and Gerry McCann from June 2022 and February 2025.

On Monday, the tribunal learned call records and information obtained from phones logged Ms Wandelt persistently asking Madeleine's mother for a genetic test during that period.

Madeleine's vanishing in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a trip in Portugal - is one of the most publicized child disappearance cases and continues to be unresolved.

'I Do Not Need Money'

One recorded message, played in court, recorded Ms Wandelt stating: "I realize I'm heavy and plain like Madeleine used to be, but I know what I feel."

While a separate message of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's answerphone stated: "Imagine there is a tiny probability that I'm her? What happens next? Is that not important for you?"

"I am not seeking money, I have a life here in Poland, I only wish to discover," she added.

The jury was advised that via electronic messages, SMS messages and calls, Ms Wandelt demanded a genetic test, sent childhood photos to her phone in a bid to display a resemblance to Mrs McCann's disappeared daughter, and claimed to have "memories" from a childhood with the McCanns.

Robert Jones, an investigator with law enforcement who compiled the evidence, told the court there "seemed to lack any responses" from Mrs McCann.

Ms Wandelt also reached out to acquaintances of the McCanns, according to the call data.

On 9 October 2024, Gerry McCann answered a phone call from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, saying she had "the wrong phone."

On that occasion Ms Wandelt left a voicemail on Mrs McCann's recording declaring "I will continue and I will prove my claim."

The court heard Mrs Spragg established a relationship through digital means with Ms Wandelt prior to accompanying her on a appearance to the McCanns' residence in that area in last December.

Communication data revealed Mrs Spragg had communicated through WhatsApp to Mrs McCann to state the news outlets had portrayed Ms Wandelt as "a crazy person" but that she deserved to be treated respectfully in the period before the visit to the village, that area, in last December.

The court learned communications between the two individuals, in last November, planning trying to get Mrs McCann's DNA samples from her garbage or from utensils at a restaurant.

"We need to assert ourselves," the co-defendant told Ms Wandelt.

On the occasion of the appearance to their home, Mrs Spragg transmitted a message which stated: "We are sitting adjacent to the McCanns' home with our vehicle dark similar to private investigators. I wanted to achieve this with someone else I hadn't anticipated I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
